According to a new book, though, that honor belongs to the automated sawmill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel required approximately ten lumberjacks laboring over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber might be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to their speedy mechanical saw, which turned timber into boards using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could construct ships more quickly compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, financial as well as artistic dominance in Europe and the globe.
