British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
